for bass flute and live electronics, 2024
Cloudweave is an exploration of focus and change within the microcosm of a single instrument and live electronics. Taking its name partly from the ever-changing patterns and landscapes of clouds viewed from above, the piece subtly touches upon an infinite sonic landscape of possibilities as the spectra of the bass flute is stretched, contracted, and unfolded. A musical narrative is created through the chain of electroacoustic phrases woven through this landscape. Very much like the way speaking a word over and over makes it sound foreign (a phenomenon called semantic satiation,) repeating certain musical phrases over and over separates the perception from the one perceiving it. This separation is at the heart of the piece: a shade of colored time slowing down.
